One of the company’s acrobats recently said that his first memory with Baro d’evel was meeting us by making a wall of paper of 80 posters glued to each other. This story reveals a lot about how the company works. Our research is not partitioned. All the artists, but also every collaborator and technician involved, move and influence each other in their specificities.
Our driving challenges are to put ourselves in danger artistically, to seek a total form of art. We thrive for crossroads and encounters while seeking excellence of each discipline. It’s an arduous and daily work, we mix movement, acrobatics, voice, music, matter, but our real singularity is to incorporate the presence of animals in this quest. Our performance spaces are thought like caskets where the animals bring a spontaneous and intense emotion. The audience is penetrated by the presence of the animals, another perception of the representation begins with their appearance.
We like to take the risk of precise writing, while being ready to improvise at every moment, and to install a layered dramaturgy, like interior poems forming a bigger one.
It is a paradox to have screenplays both strictly detailed and utterly free, but it is a way for us to always seek for the rightness of the moment, to represent what slips from us, what is told in spite of us.
We like to think of performances as ceremonies, a re-enchantments. We aim to represent all these disciplines, to bring animals, children and artists on stage. We want our shows to take the viewer into an inner labyrinth, in a waking dream.
